THE BET OF THE YACHT TRANSITION AND THE SOCIAL FOOTPRINT OF THE WORLD YACHTING INDUSTRY

APOSTOLOS KORAKAS, TREASURER OF HCPY (HELLENIC COMMITTEE FOR PROFESIONAL YACHTING)

The yachting industry has become an increasingly important player in the economy, providing a variety of job opportunities for boat builders, engineers, deckhands, captains and many more others. These careers often offer competitive salaries and benefits, making it an attractive option for those who love boating and the ocean, However, working on a yacht can be a demanding experience with long hours and long periods away from home and loved ones. Recognising its impact on the environment, the yachting industry is making a concreted effort to reduce its environmental footprint. This includes the use of environmentally friendly materials, hybrid or electric propulsion systems, and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and hydrogen fuel cells. Waste reduction and recycling programs, as well as the use of eco-friendly cleaning products, are also becoming more prevalent. These efforts help to protect the environment while ensuring the industry remains sustainable and responsible.

“RECOGNISING ITS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, THE YACHTING INDUSTRY IS MAKING A CONCRETED EFFORT TO REDUCE ITS ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT”

The latest innovation in the industry is the development of the hydrogen engines, witch offer a clean and renewable power source. These engines work by converting hydrogen into electricity, emitting only water vapour as a byproduct. This makes them an ideal solution for yachts, as they produce zero emissions and have the potential of greatly reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. Furthermore, hydrogen engines are highly efficient, providing longer ranges and greater speeds compared to traditional diesel engines.

An exciting new development in the industry is the ability for yachts to produce their own hydrogen. This closed-loop system allows yachts to generate their own clean energy and store it for later use, through the use of onboard electrolyzers that can produce hydrogen from water that they produce with onboard watermakers using electricity from their own hydrogen engines using their own produced hydrogen. This new technology promises to revolutionise the yachting industry, making it fully sustainable and self-sufficient, and providing a glimpse into a future powered by clean and renewable energy.

In addition to its environmental impact, the yachting industry also has a social impact on the communities it operates in. This translates into job opportunities and economic benefits, as well as the support of the local charities and environmental initiatives. One of the ways the industry exhibits social responsibility is by promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of their background, gender, race and other factors.

Another important aspect of the yachting industry is safety. The industry has to ensure that the yachts and the crew are equipped with the proper safety equipment and that all safety procedures are followed. Furthermore, the industry has to comply with the strict laws and regulations of the flag state and the countries where the yachts operate and make sure that the yachts have necessary certifications and licenses.

Overall, the yachting industry offers many benefits to society and to those who work in the industry. It is a growing sector that offers good jobs and income, and is taking steps towards becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Additionally, the industry has a responsibility to give back to the communities it operates in, promote diversity and inclusion, and ensure safety for all. Committed to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and social responsibility, the industry is poised and ready for continued growth and success.
